A cruise holiday offers an enticing combination of relaxation and exploration, all rolled into one unforgettable experience. Whether you crave luxurious pampering, action-packed activities, or quality family time, a cruise can cater to your desires.
However, for first-time cruisers, the vast array of cruise lines and ships can feel overwhelming. That is why I bring to you this guide that will navigate and help you choose the perfect ship for your dream cruise.
Before diving headfirst into the exciting world of cruise lines, consider some key factors that will influence your decision.
STYLE – Cruises cater to a variety of travel styles, from luxurious escapes to budget-conscious adventures. Understanding your preferred style is the first step to finding a ship that aligns with your expectations.
BUDGET – Budget is another crucial consideration, as cruise prices can vary depending on the size and amenities of the ship, as well as the chosen itinerary.
ITINERARY – Finally, the itinerary itself plays a major role. Do you dream of exploring sun-drenched Caribbean islands or journeying to the heart of Alaska’s breathtaking wilderness?
The destinations and activities offered by the cruise will significantly impact your overall experience.
Travel Style
The beauty of cruising lies in its versatility. Unlike traditional vacations where you’re confined to one location, cruises offer a world of possibilities, catering to a diverse range of travel styles. But with so many options, choosing the right ship can feel overwhelming. Here’s where understanding your travel style comes in guiding you towards your ideal cruise experience.
Family Fun: Family-friendly cruises cater to all ages, ensuring non-stop entertainment for children and most often have creches and play areas. There will be a few dedicated kids’ clubs, water slide, and themed evenings.
Luxury Escape: Think impeccable service, private balconies, and exclusive amenities like in-suite dining and personalised shore excursions. Luxury cruises redefine relaxation and indulgence especially when pampering and gourmet crafted meals by the world-renowned chefs are available for you.
Adventure Awaits: Adventure cruises are designed for those seeking something out of the ordinary. There will be activities onboard that give a sense of adrenaline rush and the thrill of exploration. Some smaller ships can also navigate uncharted territories, allowing you to get up close with breathtaking landscapes, diverse wildlife, and unique cultural encounters.
Budget-conscious: Enjoy the convenience and value of a cruise without breaking the bank. Budget-friendly lines offer a casual atmosphere, diverse dining options, and exciting itineraries to popular destinations. You can still experience the magic of cruising without compromising on your budget.
Beyond these categories, there’s a world of possibilities! Perhaps you’re a solo traveller seeking a social atmosphere or a couple yearning for a romantic getaway. Cruise lines offer themed cruises for specific interests, like find-dining enthusiasts or history buffs. The key is to identify what sparks your wanderlust and choose a ship that aligns with your vision of the perfect cruise vacation.
By understanding your travel style, you’ve taken the first crucial step towards setting sail on an unforgettable adventure. In the next section, we’ll explore popular cruise lines categorised by their target audience, highlighting their specialties and sample itineraries to help you find the ideal match for your first-time cruise experience.

Lindblad Expeditions: Lindblad Expeditions is all about the unforgettable and exciting excursions. Their small, expedition ships navigate remote regions like the Galapagos Islands, Antarctica, and the Arctic. Expert naturalists lead educational programs and shore excursions, allowing you to discover the wonders of the natural world.
Hurtigruten: Explore the dramatic coast of Norway aboard a Hurtigruten ship. These voyages are similar to coastal cruises, offering daily port calls and opportunities to experience Norwegian culture and nature firsthand. Hike through breathtaking fjords, explore charming villages, and witness the Northern Lights during the winter months.
Ponant: Discover hidden gems and off-the-beaten-path destinations with Ponant. Their sleek, French-flagged ships navigate the Mediterranean, Asia, and remote regions like the Kimberley Coast in Australia. Budget-Conscious
Carnival Cruise Line: Carnival is synonymous with fun and affordability. P&O cruises come under this category. The larger ships offer a vibrant atmosphere with plenty of activities, from water slides and mini-golf courses to live music and dance clubs. Carnival cruises typically focus on the Caribbean and Bahamas, offering great value for money. P&O focus on European itineraries exploring the Mediterranean, Scandinavia, and the Canary Islands. Not only are P&O Cruises known for their excellent value for money but their traditional British charm.
Norwegian Cruise Line (Again!): As mentioned earlier, Norwegian Cruise Line’s freestyle cruising concept caters to budget-conscious travellers with its diverse dining options and relaxed atmosphere. Choose from a wide range of itineraries worldwide, all at competitive prices.
Costa Cruises: Immerse yourself in Italian culture aboard a Costa Cruises ship. Enjoy delicious Italian cuisine, vibrant onboard entertainment, and exciting itineraries exploring the Mediterranean, Caribbean, and the Far East. Costa Cruises offer a good balance of value and amenities.
Budget
A cruise is a luxury in itself being in a floating hotel with guaranteed blue ocean views and unmissable adventures but, let’s face it, a cruise holiday can sometimes feel out of reach financially. If you are like me and a budget-conscious traveller, do not fear. Cruising can be surprisingly affordable, offering a lot of bang for your buck if you do it right. I will guide you on how to choose the right cruise for you without breaking the bank.
Understand that various cruises have different price points and there are several factors that affect this.
Ship Size and Amenities: Larger ships packed with features like water slides, climbing walls, and multiple specialty restaurants will naturally be more expensive than smaller, more basic vessels. Consider prioritising the amenities that matter most to you and choose a ship that strikes the right balance between features and affordability. I personally like the ships that have decent sized heated pools.
Itinerary: Dreaming of far-away destinations like the South Pacific, Antarctica or the Caribbean? Be prepared for a higher price tag compared to a European cruise closer to home. The duration of the cruise also plays a role, with longer voyages typically costing more… unless doing a transatlantic or transpacific (also known as a re-positioning cruise). These 2-week cruises can be cheaper as they move from from cruise itinerary to another taking the opportunity to do renovations etc.
Seasonality: Similar to flights and hotels, cruise prices fluctuate based on seasonality. Peak seasons like summer and holidays will see higher prices compared to shoulder seasons (spring and autumn). If you’re flexible with your travel dates, consider opting for an off-peak cruise to score significant savings. Lastminute sailings can either increase rapidly in price or be at it’s lowest with ‘last-minute deals’ so always check on websites such as Vacations to Go.
Accommodations: Interior staterooms, the most basic accommodations on a cruise ship, offer the most affordable option. While they won’t have a window or balcony, they provide a comfortable space to sleep and shower. Upgrading to an ocean view or balcony stateroom will increase the cost, but also provide extra space and stunning ocean views. Balcony views may be a requirement for you when sailing somewhere like the Norwegian Fjords, however, a cruise where you will spend more time off the ship doing excursions… not so much. I did an inside cabin for a 7-day Norway cruise which was doable. You just have to make the most of the public areas of the ship.
Choose a Budget-Friendly Cruise Line: Several cruise lines cater specifically to budget-conscious travellers. Lines like Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line (with their freestyle dining concept), and Costa Cruises offer excellent value for money. These lines may have fewer amenities compared to luxury ships, but they still provide a fun and enjoyable cruise experience.
Look for Deals and Promotions: Many cruise lines offer promotions and discounts throughout the year. Keep an eye on their websites and social media pages for deals like “Kids Sail Free” offers, discounts for 2nd & 3rd sailers or onboard credit incentives.
Plan Your Shore Excursions: Shore excursions can add significantly to your overall cruise cost. Research destinations beforehand and consider exploring independently or booking tours through local vendors instead of cruise line excursions.
By understanding cruise costs and employing these budget-friendly tips, you can plan an incredible cruise holiday without sacrificing your financial well-being. Do you crave a luxurious suite with a private balcony, or are you content with a comfortable interior stateroom? Do you dream of exotic destinations, or are you happy exploring closer-to-home ports? Once you prioritise your needs and wants, you can choose a cruise line and itinerary that aligns perfectly with your budget and travel style.
Itinerary
Pause and think about the specific ports and itineraries that you really want to see and do. Below are some key questions ti ask yourself.
Where in the World to Explore? Is it the Caribbean beaches, the vibrant cultures of the Mediterranean, or the dramatic landscapes of Alaska? Identifying your dream destinations or places you have never visited to help narrow down your options. What I do is delve deeper and research specific ports of call and see all there is to do there. Trip Advisor – ‘Things to do’ in a given are can help you out! Reading online reviews or forums like Cruise Critic gain insights from fellow travellers about their experiences at each port and onboard the ship.
Beach Vibes or History Buff? Next think do you want to be basking on a sun-lounger on a beach with a cocktail in hand, or rather exploring ancient ruins immersing yourself in fascinating cultures. Do you crave relaxation and rejuvenation, or are you eager to learn and discover new historical treasures? Understanding your preferred activity style will help you choose a cruise itinerary that caters to your interests.
Do you want adventure? Are you an adrenaline junkie seeking thrilling shore excursions? Do you crave underwater adventures or the chance to encounter unique wildlife? Many cruises offer exciting shore excursions like scuba diving, zip-lining, or wildlife safaris. Consider the types of activities that get your heart racing and choose a cruise with itineraries that offer these experiences.
Port of Call or High Seas Escape? Do you envision spending most of your time exploring various ports, or do you prefer to relax and soak up the onboard amenities on sea days? Some cruises focus heavily on port calls, offering shorter stays in multiple destinations. Others prioritise longer stretches at sea, allowing you to enjoy the features and entertainment offered by the ship itself. Consider your preference for exploration versus onboard relaxation to help you decide.
How Long? Cruise itineraries range from short getaways to epic voyages spanning several weeks. Choose a cruise duration that aligns with your holiday time frame and budget.
By prioritising your travel wants, style, budget, constraints and using the tips above, you’ll be well-equipped to choose a cruise itinerary that surpasses your expectations. Remember, the perfect cruise is all about creating lasting memories within your budget. These tips above are great for families, solo travellers or couples ready to book a cruise. Whether you crave relaxation on pristine beaches, exploration of ancient ruins, or thrilling adventures, there’s a cruise itinerary for everyone.
With the knowledge you’ve gained and the resources at your fingertips, it’s time to book your dream cruise! Set sail for adventure, relaxation, and unforgettable memories. The open seas await – bon voyage!
