WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM GREECE?

Kalosórisate stin Elláda!

Greece is full of historical buildings, volcanic cliffs with ocean views and windy roads that, if you’re lucky, lead to the Mediterranean Sea. Greece is also authentic Greek food and full of rich cultural traditions which is openly shared with the locals.

My first trip to Greece was a 7-day Greek Islands cruise which stopped off at Mykonos and Santorini.

I spent a day on both Mykonos and Santorini. Santorini was just like the photos with white buildings and blue tops however, as it was June time, it was extremely busy with tourists and full of long queues. I must say I saw the most epic sunset from Thira, Santorini it is all about picking the right restaurant with stunning views.

The popular tourist destination of Mykonos was a lot calmer than Santorini. Full of white washed buildings and so many narrow ally’s leading off in different directions. For some reason it was not as densely populated with tourists as Santorini. It had more options ti experience the amazing beaches around the coast to lounge and taking in the views.

TIPS WHEN TRAVELLING

Accommodation – Greece offers a variety of accommodation options to suit different travel preferences. Consider staying in traditional guesthouses or family-run businesses via airbnb for an authentic experience often offer stunning views of the Aegean Sea. For a touch of luxury, boutique hotels and resorts are abundant, particularly in popular destinations like Santorini and Mykonos. In major cities like Athens and Thessaloniki, you’ll find a range of hotels, from budget-friendly to upscale, catering to various budgets. There is also another option to stay on working farms and enjoy the rural charm of Greece.

Food – Greek cuisine is a celebration of fresh ingredients, vibrant flavours, and time-honored recipes. Don’t miss out on iconic dishes such as moussaka, souvlaki, and spanakopita. Explore the local tavernas for authentic Greek mezes, which are small shared plates bursting with flavors like tzatziki, dolmades which I love, and feta cheese. Greece is also renowned for its pure olive oil, honey, and olives.

Transportation – ATV, Tour Buses, Scooters and rental cars. Island hopping is a popular activity, and ferries are the primary mode of transport between the Greek islands. Book your ferry tickets in advance, especially during peak season, to ensure availability. Domestic flights are also available for longer distances or if you want to maximise your time. In larger cities like Athens and Thessaloniki, public transportation networks, including metro, buses, and trams, are efficient and affordable. If you’re exploring rural areas renting a car allows for greater flexibility and the opportunity to discover hidden gems at your own pace.

Suggested daily budget – 60 – 100 EURO
