WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM ITALY?

Italy is a destination that is full of history, rich culture and amazing authentic food! There are so many parts of Italy that can be explored whether that be road tripping, solo travelliing, couples travelling, family holidays or just taking public transport around. There is always something to do in the glorious sunshine or indoor venues to explore when the rain pours.

I will share with you the experiences and tips I learnt on my trips in Italy which include a 7-night Greek Cruise and 3 day road trip.

TIPS WHEN TRAVELLING

Accommodation – When looking at accommodation you should compare hotels and airbnbs that fit your budget. It can be costly near the capital but if a balcony and a pool is not priority you can cut down on costs. The cost per night in a hotel when I travelled in Rome was 120euros, Milan was 82euros and Venice 114euros. If you opt for a hostel then this can work out cheaper.

Food – Food is always on every street corner so you have no excuse not to try Italian Pizza or Pasta! The great thing is you can wonder down the streets of Italy no matter where you are and there most likely will be restaurants with their doors open waiting to invite you in. Just note that Italians eat dinner at 8pm-10pm however places that are more touristy centred will accommodate dinner to be served earlier.

Transportation – Trains are a great to get around Italy especially if pre booked to lock in better prices. I would say renting a car makes for a flexible road trip however beware of the drivers on the road that drive super fast (up to your bumper fast) and middle lane hoggers. Ubers or standard taxis are very convenient and we have always had a good experience using them. A favourite of mine was the e-scooters around the city which allow you to take in the city views and get from A -> B. There are also bikes that can be rented.

Suggested Daily Budget – 40-50 EUR

MONEY SAVING TIPS

1
Book accommodation near centre Regular taxis from way out of the city particularly in and around Rome can add up. Very convenient but costly. Aim to stay centrally.
2
Check Menu Prices Always prepare yourself for restaurant prices as some authentic Italian restaurants are reasonable and some may double or triples their prices due to the location eg near the colosseum.
3
Book Entrance Tickets It is best to pre-book entrance tickets to historical and popular venues or excursions beforehand. This is to avoid disappointment of them selling out and to avoid the dodgy people selling fake tickets.
4
Pay with Travel Card If you use your travel credit cards eg Monzo, will automatically convert the currency for you. This is very useful when travelling abroad.
